HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Junior middle blocker Guillermo Perez smashed nine kills while hitting .500 and had two block assists for 10 total points to lead the St. John Fisher men's volleyball team to a non-league sweep (25-10, 25-10, 25-16) on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals improved to 9-6 overall with the victory, their fifth in their last six matches, while Houghton dropped to 4-13. Fisher has swept Houghton in each of the last three seasons.
How It Happened
St. John Fisher opened the first set on a 15-5 run and never let up en route to a 15-point victory, 25-10. Freshman outside Avery Kielbasinski led the Cardinals' offense with four kills, while senior setter Tyler Cohen and junior middle blocker Connor Holmes had three apiece. Fisher had seven service aces in the frame, with six of them coming from senior outside hitter Gabe La Robardiere.
The Cardinals continued to steamroll the Highlanders in the second set, slamming 15 kills while logging a .650 hitting percentage in another 25-10 win. Senior outside hitter Casey Jackson and sophomore outside hitter Coleton Welter had four kills apiece. Perez and senior outside hitter Jimmy Roberts finished the set with three each.
Perez added five more kills to his line in the final set as the Cardinals wrapped up the swift sweep with a 25-16 victory. Freshmen outside hitters Dylan Leong and Giancarlo Martinez each joined in on the fun with four kills apiece.
The Cardinals hit over .300 and had 12 or more kills in each set, including 18 in the final stanza.
