How They Got Here

No. 8 St. John Fisher: Upsets ruled the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament over the weekend, and the Cardinals pulled off the biggest one. With their 77-72 victory over Russell Sage in Albany on Saturday, they became the first No. 8 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in any of the conference’s championship tournaments.

Freshman guard Mekhi Gidney, who shot 5-of-14 overall (1-of-4 from three) and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, led the Cardinals with 18 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Jack Janes and junior guard Giovanni Schillaci made huge contributions off the bench with 17 and 15 points, respectively, while sophomore forward/center Maximus Michalski also scored in double figures. He had 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with six rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal. Senior guard Max Schneider dished out a game-high six assists and chipped in five points.

The Gators' 72 points marked their second-fewest in a game this season. They entered the postseason as the top-scoring team in the Empire 8 at 86.4 points per game and had scored 80 or more points in 19 consecutive contests, a streak that began on Nov. 30.

Fisher shot 50.9% from the field, its third-highest mark in a game this season.

No. 5 SUNY Brockport: The Golden Eagles took down No. 4-seeded SUNY Poly 84-75 on Saturday for their eighth consecutive victory. Ajani Fleming, who shot 5-of-8 from three, led the Golden Eagles with 19 points. Jacob Oka had 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and nine boards, while Pharell Aybar added 14 points, five boards and five assists. Cameron Pownall was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor, scoring 14 points in just 18 minutes of play.

The Golden Eagles shot 58.5% (31-of-53) for the game and 66.6% (16-of-24) in the second half alone. They outscored SUNY Poly by 20 in the paint, 50-30, for the game.

With A Win…

St. John Fisher would… become the first No. 8 seed to advance to an E8 championship game in conference history (across all sports)... advance to the E8 championship game for the first time since 2023 and fifth time overall under head coach Mike Grosodonia II… advance to the E8 championship game for the 15th time in program history… beat Brockport for the second time this season… improve to 5-2 in E8 semifinal games under Grosodonia.
