Men's Volleyball Splits A Pair Of Five-Set Matches Saturday

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The No. 18 St. John Fisher men's volleyball team (4-2) split a pair of five-set matches on Saturday in the Thiel College Tri Match, beating Roanoke before falling to the hosts in the nightcap. 

Match 1: St. John Fisher 3, Roanoke 2

The Cardinals dropped the first set 25-23 before claiming the second set 25-20 and the third 26-24. Roanoke earned a 25-21 victory in the fourth set to force the extra frame, which the Cardinals claimed 15-13. Junior outside hitter Connor Holmes led Fisher with four kills while hitting .500 in the fifth set. 

Senior outside hitter Gabe La Robardiere slammed a match-high 15 kills, while Holmes finished with 12 kills and a team-best .556 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Casey Jackson contributed 10 kills. 

The Cardinals had two setters – seniors Tyler Cohen and Aidan Calhoun – record more than 20 assists in the match. Cohen amassed 26, and Calhoun had 21. Freshman libero Luke Zimmermann led Fisher with 17 digs. 

Match Notes

  • Cohen's 26 assists marked a career high. 

  • Holmes set a career high with his 12 kills.

  • Junior middle blocker Guillermo Perez recorded five total blocks, including four assists and one solo. 

Match 2: Thiel 3, St. John Fisher 2

The Cardinals took the first set 25-18, dropped the second set 27-25 and dominated the third set 25-13 to take a 2-1 match lead. Thiel ripped off two straight victories to earn the match win, taking the fourth set 25-23 and the fifth set 15-12. 

Avery Kielbasinski pounded a team-high 17 kills while hitting .323 and had five block assists to finish with 19.5 points. Jackson accounted for 16 points on 11 kills and five service aces, while La Robardiere had 11.5 points on 11 kills and a block assist. 

Cohen led the Cardinals with 25 assists, and Calhoun had 21. Jackson (13) and Zimmerman (10) each had double-digit digs. 

Match Notes

  • Jackson matched his career high with five service aces. 

  • Perez and sophomore outside hitter Coleton Welter each had seven kills and six total blocks, all of them assists. 

  • La Robardiere logged a team-high .688 hitting percentage.
