PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 1-seeded St. John Fisher women's soccer team fell 3-1 to No. 4-seeded SUNY Geneseo in the Empire 8 Conference Championship Semifinals on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium.
The Knights (11-4-3) will face No. 2-seeded Nazareth (12-3-3) in the E8 title game on Saturday. St. John Fisher (15-3), which had been pushing to repeat as Empire 8 champions, lost two contests to conference teams all season, both to Geneseo.
How It Happened
Maggie Zito gave the Knights a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, and Ella Yartym found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to double Geneseo's advantage. Both goals were scored unassisted.
The Knights made it 3-0 less than a minute into the second half. Yartym received a long pass from Lauren DeMura and, with St. John Fisher keeper Isabella Ayers sprinting toward her, finished her second goal of the night.
Stout defensively throughout, Geneseo kept St. John Fisher off the board until the game's final minute. Freshman forward Jillyan Ewing accounted for that tally.
The Cardinals, the conference's highest-scoring team during the regular season, managed just three shots (two on goal) all night. Geneseo finished with nine shots (six on goal).
