Setting The Scene

The Cardinals took No. 11/12 Cortland down to the wire last Saturday but came up empty on two chances to engineer a game-trying drive in a 28-20 loss at Grady Field.

St. John Fisher fell to 5-2 overall (2-2 Empire 8 Conference) and suffered their eighth consecutive loss to the Red Dragons, who have won 38 consecutive games against Empire 8 opponents. Saturday’s contest marked only the second time during that winning streak that the Red Dragons' margin of victory was eight points or fewer.

St. John Fisher's defense limited a high-powered Cortland offense to 299 total yards (4.9 yards per play) and 15 first downs, both season lows. The Red Dragons' 28 points marked their second-fewest this season.

Graduate senior safety Eric Sparkman led the Cardinals with 11 tackles, and junior linebacker Jack Tanoory set a season high with 10 stops. Junior defensive back Micah Harshfield returned an interception for a touchdown and made seven tackles, including six solo stops.

Most of Cortland's offensive production came on the ground, as the Red Dragons amassed 195 yards and four touchdowns rushing on 45 attempts. Quarterback Mike Rescigno rushed for 103 yards and three scores, while running back Ethan Gallo accounted for 67 yards and a score. Rescigno completed just 6-of-16 passes for 104 yards, the fewest passing yards the Cardinals have allowed this season.

St. John Fisher punted six times, committed one turnover and produced a season-low 246 yards. Senior quarterback Ryan Whitney completed 15-of-29 passes for 139 yards with one touchdown and an interception and rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Senior wide receiver Jackson Cusack led the Cardinals with seven receptions for 59 yards, and freshman wide receiver Marc Dellaquila caught two passes for 22 yards and his first collegiate touchdown.

The Red Dragons led 21-7 at halftime, but Harshfield’s interception return pulled the Cardinals back within a touchdown midway through the third quarter. However, after Fisher punted twice in the fourth quarter, the Red Dragons regained a two-touchdown lead with 3:22 left on quarterback Mike Rescigno's third rushing score of the day.

Whitney connected with Dellaquila for a 14-yard touchdown pass to cap an 11-play, 77-yard drive with just over a minute to play.

The Cardinals face another massive test in Week 9 as they prepare to welcome Utica to Growney Stadium. The Pioneers have been receving votes in various national polls and were ranked as high as No. 22 in the D3football.com Top 25 earlier this month.

With A Win Over Utica…

The Cardinals would…. record their sixth win before November for just the sixth time since 2010… snap a seven-game losing streak to Utica… be 6-2 or better entering the final month of the season for the first time since 2016… improve to 4-0 at home this season… improve to 4-0 at home for the first time since 2016…  improve to 8-2 at home under head coach Ed Raby Jr.

Strong At Home

The Cardinals have been a strong home team under head coach Ed Raby Jr., boasting a 7-2 record (7-1 regular season) at Growney Stadium since the beginning of last season. Their lone losses came to a nationally ranked Cortland team last October and to RPI in the ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl last November. St. John Fisher enters Saturday’s contest against Utica with a 3-0 mark at home this season.

Stat St. John Fisher (in home games since 2025) Opponents (at Growney Stadium since 2025)

Total Yards Per Game 256.9 213.4
Passing Yards Per Game 206.8 169.3

Harshfield Having A Breakout Season

Junior cornerback Micah Harshfield has become one of the Cardinals’ top defensive playmakers with an expanded role this season. He has played and started in all seven games and leads the Cardinals in solo tackles (34), passes defended (8) and interceptions (2).

Harshfield earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week after making seven tackles (6 solo) and returning an interception 42 yards for a touchdown last week against Cortland. He recorded Fisher’s first pick-six since 2024 and became the first Cardinal since 2022 to record interceptions in consecutive games.

- Harshfield ranks second in the Empire 8 with eight passes defended.

- Against Cortland, Harshfield became the sixth Cardinal in the last 10 seasons to record interceptions in consecutive games.

- Harshfield’s pick-six against Cortland marked just the Cardinals’ sixth in the last 10 seasons.

Whitney Posting Historic Numbers

Ryan Whitney continues to put together one of the best all-around seasons by a St. John Fisher quarterback, accomplishing something spectacular nearly every week with his arm, legs, or both.

Through seven games, the senior has completed 64% of his passes for 1,622 yards with 11 touchdowns to four interceptions. He also leads the Cardinals in every rushing category with 522 yards and 10 touchdowns on 114 attempts.

Whitney delivered arguably his best collegiate performance in St. John Fisher’s victory over Hartwick on Oct. 10, rushing for a career-high 186 yards with two 70-plus-yard touchdowns and passing for 273 yards and a score. His 186 yards rushing marked the second-most in a game by a quarterback in program history.

Stat Total DIII Rank/Empire 8 Rank
Completion % 64% 45th/3rd
Passing YDs 1,622 34th/2nd
Passing YDs Per Game 231.7 36th/2nd

Rushing TDs 10 15th/4th

Total Offensive Yards Per Game 306.3 13th/2nd

Whitney has earned Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week honors three times this season, most recently on Oct. 12 after his performance against Hartwick.

Whitney Rushing Notes

- Whitney is one of three players in program history to have two 70-plus-yard touchdown runs in a season. He joined running backs Jason Meyers (2001) and Malachi Duvall (2022) on that list.

- Against Hartwick, Whitney became the first player in Fisher history to rush for two 70-plus-yard touchdowns in the same game.

- Whitney’s 80-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter marked Fisher’s fifth 80-plus-yard TD run since 2000. Malachi Duvall (2022), James Chambers (2017), Mark Robinson (2005) and Jason Meyers (2001) had the others.

- Whitney's 186 yards rushing against Hartwick marked the most by a Fisher player since running back Peyton Nolan had 189 yards against Keystone in Sept. 2023.

- Whitney's 186 yards rushing against Hartwick marked the most by a Fisher quarterback since 2014, when Ryan Kramer amassed 244 yards in an October game against Utica.

- Whitney has rushed for a touchdown in seven consecutive games. He's the first Fisher player to have a streak that long since All-American running back Mark Robinson rushed for a score in eight consecutive games in 2006.

-  Whitney has 16 career rushing touchdowns, one shy of the program record for a quarterback. Ryan Kramer (17 TDs as a QB) holds the top mark (Kramer finished his career with 26 total rushing scores but scored nine of them as a tailback/receiver in 2010).

- Whitney also needs just three more rushing TDs to set the program record for the most in a season by a quarterback. Ryan Kramer ran for 12 TDs in 2011.

-Whitney has recorded a passing and rushing touchdown in the same game nine times since he became the Cardinals' starting quarterback in 2024.

- Whitney has passed and rushed for a TD in the same game six times this season, the most in program history. He’s the fourth QB in program history to have three such performances in a season.

- Whitney has rushed for 100 yards or more in four career games, tied with Ryan Kramer for the most by a quarterback in program history.

Whitney Passing Notes

- Entering last week's game against Cortland, Whitney completed more than 60% of his passes in eight consecutive games dating back to the end of last season, the longest such streak in program history.

- Whitney’s 11 passing touchdowns are the most by a Fisher quarterback through seven games of a season since Hunter Walsh passed for 12 touchdowns in the first sevean games of the 2019 season

- Whitney recorded his 29th career touchdown pass against Cortland, tying Nick Suchyna (2005-06) for the seventh most in program history.

- Whitney has passed for 200-plus yards in six of the Cardinals’ last eight games since last November. He has done so in five of the Cardinals’ seven games this season.

Cusack Doing It All

Aside from rushing for a touchdown, senior wide receiver Jackson Cusack has done a little bit of everything for the Cardinals. He leads Fisher in every receiving category with 40 catches for 543 yards and four touchdowns, has returned five punts for 98 yards and a score, and has thrown one pass for 49 yards and a score. Cusack is the first player in program history to have a receiving touchdown, a punt return touchdown, and a passing touchdown in the same season.

- Cusack currently ranks 10th in program history with 108 career receptions.

- Cusack returned a punt for a touchdown and passed for a touchdown against Brockport on Oct. 3. Both scores came in the fourth quarter.

- His 46-yard punt return TD against Brockport marked the first by a Fisher player since TySean Sizer recorded a 76-yard score against The College of New Jersey on Sept. 21, 2019.

- Cusack’s 49-yard touchdown pass against Brockport marked Fisher’s first by a wide receiver since Mike Collichio threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Harrington against Frostburg State on Nov. 19, 2016.

- Cusack recorded his 13th career receiving TD against Hartwick on Oct. 10, passing Will Blake, Dan Witkowski and Mike Fusilli for 10th on the program's career TD receptions list.

- Cusack surpassed 100 career receptions with his 11-catch performance against Hartwick. He became just the 12th player in program history to reach the 100-catch mark.

- Cusack’s 11 catches against Hartwick marked a career high.

The Cardinal Notebook (Player Notes)

-Senior defensive linemen Greg Rayl and Jedrek Olkowski each recorded two sacks against Hartwick. Olkowski has enjoyed a strong senior season, as he has 3.5 sacks and five tackles for a loss.

-Junior defensive back Micah Harshfield snagged his first collegiate interception against Hartwick. He ranks third in the Empire 8 with seven passes defended.

- Senior kicker Logan Laratta has made eight consecutive field goals, the longest streak in program history. Laratta drilled a career-long 40-yard attempt in Fisher’s Week 2 victory over St. Lawrence.

- Junior running back Justin Maier's 167 kick return yards against Brockport marked the most by a Fisher player since Ryan Kramer had 187 yards against Frostburg State in Oct. 2013.

-Senior safety Timothy Vanderbrink made a career-high 16 tackles against Brockport, the most by a Fisher player since Joe Miscia had 16 against SUNY Morrisville in 2022.

- Junior wide receiver Gavin Horton caught four passes for a career-high 105 yards against Alfred. He had an 82-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the second quarter, the Cardinals’ longest play from scrimmage this season. Horton also has a 72-yard touchdown reception this season (Week 1 against FDU Florham).

- Horton had at least 70 yards receiving in each of Fisher's first four games. He became the first Cardinal since Will Blake in 2019 to record 70-plus yards receiving in the first four games of a season.

-Junior linebacker Jack Bierman was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after setting career highs in tackles (10), tackles for a loss (4) and sacks (2) in the Cardinals’ win over FDU-Florham. Bierman joined safety Timothy VanderBrink and linebackers Jack Tanoory and Kyle DaMore as the fourth Cardinal to be named to the D3football.com Team of the Week under head coach Ed Raby Jr. Last season marked the first during which Fisher had three national weekly honorees since 2014.

-Against FDU, Bierman became the first Fisher player to have four or more tackles for a loss in a game since John Cleary (4 vs. Bridgewater) in 2019. It was just the 10th time since 2010 that a Fisher player had at least that many tackles for a loss in a game.

The Cardinal Notebook (Team Notes)

General

- The Cardinals opened the season 4-0 for the first time since 2016.

- With wins over FDU-Florham, St. Lawrence and Rochester, the Cardinals finished unbeaten in non-conference play for the first time since 2016.

- Against the University of Rochester on Sept. 19, Ed Raby Jr. recorded his tenth win since becoming the head coach in 2025, making him the fastest coach in program history to reach the 10-win mark.

-The Cardinals have been the least-penalized team in the Empire 8 this season. They have committed just 34 total infractions, an average of 4.86 per game.

Offense

-The Cardinals' offense has been mostly exceptional in the red zone this season. St. John Fisher has cashed in for points on 17 of its 20 trips to the red zone (85%), with 13 of those scores being touchdowns. The Cardinals have the third-best red-zone offense in the Empire 8.

- The Cardinals went 12-of-13 on red-zone chances with 10 touchdowns in their first four games. The last time they began a season that effectively in the red zone was 2016, when they scored on 18 of their first 19 chances inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

-The Cardinals' offense has also been strong on third down with a 45.1% converstion rate, the second-best mark in the Empire 8. That percentage is also good for 53rd nationally.

- Fisher has committed the second-fewest turnovers (7) in the Empire 8.

Defense

-The Cardinals' defense got off to a historic start against the run, holding their first four opponents under 100 yards without allowing a rushing score. It marked the first time in program history that the Cardinals went four straight games without allowing a rushing touchdown.

-The Cardinals totaled five sacks against Hartwick, their most in a game since they had five against Hartwick in October 2018.

-The Cardinals rank third in the Empire 8 in total defense, allowing 273.4 yards per game. The unit also ranks third in the E8 against the run (114.6 yards allowed per game).

Special Teams

- The Cardinals rank first in the Empire 8 in kickoff return defense (16.39 yards allowed per return).

- The Cardinals rank 12th nationally and lead the E8 in yards per punt return (16.50).

Jackson Cusack

Player Spotlight: Jackson Cusack, WR | Written By St. John Fisher Athletics Communications Student Assistant Nic Bakker

Jackson Cusack doesn't keep track of his numbers. Ask the St. John Fisher senior wide receiver how many touchdown catches he has, and he'll tell you he has no idea.

"I'm not a stat guy at all," Cusack said. "I just want to be the person that's going to leave it all out there on the field."

That is, unless he is bantering with his wide receiver coach, Will Blake. Lately, he has enjoyed ribbing coach Blake, a Fisher alum on the program's all-time receiving lists, after passing him in career touchdown catches (Cusack recorded his 13th career touchdown reception against Hartwick on Oct. 13).

Through seven games this year, the senior captain leads the Cardinals with 40 receptions for 543 yards and four touchdown catches, and he also leads the team with 641 all-purpose yards.

In this year’s installment of the Courage Bowl, his versatility in his ability was on full display. He returned a punt for a touchdown and threw one, hitting Shawn Watson for 49 yards on a double pass at Brockport after taking a bubble screen from quarterback Ryan Whitney.

Cusack is no stranger to slinging the ball down the field, as he played quarterback running the triple option at Fonda-Fultonville High School, where he was named League MVP. "Not a very threatening quarterback," he said. "More of a runner."

Fonda and Fultonville are two towns split by the Mohawk River, about an hour west of Albany. Cusack grew up competing against the same kids in youth football before they all became high school teammates. "Smaller school, everybody knew everybody," he said.

At Fisher, being accustomed to having tight bonds within his teammates has paid dividends. His closest bond is with quarterback Ryan Whitney. The two arrived together and are now team captains.

"I look at him as a brother," Cusack said. "I've got full heart trust in him on the field." He believes the friendship shows up in his production. "It's definitely tougher for two strangers to go out there and be on the same page."

Listed at 175 pounds for three seasons, Cusack entered camp this summer at 200. "I just knew coming in this year I was going to be expected to do quite a bit physically and athletically," he said.

“I've always wanted to be the bigger person in my matchups and dominate the person across from me. If we're playing catch in the backyard, I'm going to try to win that rep," he said.

As a captain, he rarely needs to raise his voice because "everybody holds each other accountable," but he knows the younger players are watching. "I love it when younger guys come up to me and say they want to be like me. That's a great honor."

That approach carries into this week's game against Utica, as Fisher looks to bounce back from a loss at Cortland. Cusack had nine catches for 99 yards against the Pioneers as a sophomore, but don't expect him to reminisce on it.

When asked about that game, nothing came to mind. "Once a game's over, it's on to the next one," he said. "The most important game is the game we have the next week."

Family has been there for every one of those weeks. His parents attend every game, home or away, and his father is well known to address the tailgate crowd beforehand.

The No. 4 on his jersey honors his older sister, who wore it in high school and college. "They were always going to be proud of me. That's played the biggest role in why I still play football."

But when people look back on his career, he hopes they remember the person more than the player. After every game, win or lose, he makes a point to hug parents at the tailgate and thank them for coming.

"I tell everybody I love them when I'm walking away, and that's not just saying it," he said. "I really do love all those guys, and I would fight for them for anything."

St. John Fisher head coach Ed Raby Jr. during an NCAA football game against St. Lawrence on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025 in Pittsford, N.Y.

About Head Coach Ed Raby Jr.

Ed Raby Jr.’s first season as St. John Fisher University’s head football coach delivered marked improvement and a palpable sense of rejuvenation to a program that had slipped from its once-consistent winning ways.

The Cardinals authored one of the top turnaround stories in Division III in 2025, finishing 7-4 overall with a 5-2 mark in Empire 8 Conference play for their first winning season since 2016. Fisher, which went 3-7 in 2024, ended the regular season as one of 11 teams in the country with a plus-four jump in victories from the previous year.

Raby’s team vanquished two of the program’s other nine-year droughts along the way in beating SUNY Brockport in the Courage Bowl – 31-24 in an overtime thriller at Growney Stadium – and qualifying for a postseason game. The Cardinals hosted Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl to conclude the season.

The Cardinals took steps forward in all phases in Raby’s first season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Fisher’s defense went from allowing nearly 30 points and 370 yards per game in 2024 to 20.09 points and 339 yards per game in 2025.

St. John Fisher finished the year with 10 All-Empire 8 selections and three D3football.com Team of the Week honorees – safety Timothy VanderBrink and linebackers Kyle DaMore and Jack Tanoory. Fisher hadn’t had three different players earn weekly recognition from D3football.com in a season since 2014.

Raby became the eighth head football coach in St. John Fisher history in February 2025 after eight years at SUNY Morrisville. He spent four years as SUNY Morrisville’s head coach – the first two as the interim – and led the Mustangs to a pair of ECAC Bowl appearances. He joined the Morrisville staff in 2017 as defensive coordinator and safeties coach under the leadership of head coach Curt Fitzpatrick, a 2004 St. John Fisher graduate who won a Division III national title at SUNY Cortland in 2023.

Following Fitzpatrick’s departure for Cortland in February 2020, Morrisville named Raby its interim head coach. The Mustangs went 2-8 overall (1-5 Empire 8) in 2021, the first season after the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020 season, before improving significantly in 2022. They finished 7-4 (3-3 Empire 8) and reached the ECAC Robert M. Scotty Whitelaw Bowl.

Morrisville had its best season under Raby in 2024, going 7-4 overall (5-2 Empire 8) and beating Stevenson University 21-18 in the Robert M. Scotty Whitelaw Bowl. The Mustangs’ five conference wins marked the program’s most E8 victories in a single season.

The Mustangs consistently boasted stingy defenses under Raby’s direction. In 2022, the Mustangs allowed just 11 points per game, the fewest in the Empire 8, and 290.6 yards per game, the third-fewest in the conference. They ranked third in scoring defense (18 points per game) and total defense (310.7 yards per game) this past season.

As head coach of the Mustangs, Raby produced 48 All-Empire 8 selections, including eight first-teamers. Linebacker Ernesto Mitchell earned Empire 8 Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors and became the first Morrisville player to be named an All-American by D3Football.com in 2022.

Raby arrived at Morrisville after three years at Allegheny College, where he served as the defensive line coach for two seasons and the linebackers coach for one. He coached tight ends and defensive linemen at Alfred University in 2014.

Raby, who was a defensive lineman, played collegiately at Division III Alma College for four years (2009-12). He earned his master’s degree in business administration from Alfred University in 2014.

Series History: St. John Fisher vs. Utica

Series Snapshot: The Cardinals own a 16-8 all-time record against Utica but enter Saturday's contest on a seven-game losing streak to the Pioneers. Fisher won the first 15 games in the series, which began in 2001.

Series Notes: While the Cardinals have struggled in the series in recent years, they are 9-2 all-time against the Pioneers at home. Utica lost nine straight games to Fisher at Growney Stadium until recording a 35-21 win on the Cardinals' home turf in November 2022.

Last Meeting: Utica quarterback Tyler Szalkowski completed 22-of-29 passes for 270 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in a 31-7 win over St. John Fisher last season. Pioneers tight end Logan Frederick caught eight passes for 129 yards and two scores.

The Cardinals managed just 215 total yards – 151 passing and 64 rushing. Running back Christian Beason accounted for Fisher's lone touchdown, a two-yard plunge into the end zone in the second quarter. It marked his first collegiate touchdown.

Last Win: The Cardinals, in the longest game in program history, outlasted Utica 39-36 in a five-overtime affair on Oct. 14, 2017. The game lasted nearly four hours and featured 169 total offensive plays for 678 combined yards.

The Cardinals' offense gained all but 26 of its yards in the game on the ground, amassing 241 yards on 52 rushes, the second-most attempts in a game in program history. Running back James Chambers had 123 yards and two scores, while quarterback Johnathan Letta churned out 71 yards and found the end zone once.

Fisher also blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown that night. The Cardinals have not returned a blocked punt for a score since.

Utica Connections

Utica head coach Blaise Faggiano spent nine seasons as St. John Fisher’s defensive coordinator. Alongside Paul Vosburgh, who was St. John Fisher’s head coach for 34 years, Faggiano had a key role in establishing the Cardinals as a national contender.

After winning just five games between 1999 and 2001, the Cardinals went 6-4 in 2002, 8-3 in 2003 and 10-2 in 2004, when they won the Empire 8 Conference and played in the NCAA DIII Football Championship for the first time in program history. The Cardinals reached the NCAA Division III Semifinals in 2006 and the NCAA Elite 8 in 2007.

Scouting Utica | Written By St. John Fisher Athletics Communications Student Assistant Jackson Gallivan

Last Time Out

The Pioneers dominated Alfred 35-0 last Saturday at home to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Empire 8 Conference play.

Utica's defense suffocated the Saxons, allowing just two rushing yards and 102 passing yards. Alfred's offense failed to reach the red zone.

On offense, the Pioneers exploded for 430 total yards and five touchdowns behind a balanced attack on the ground and through the air. That combination of elite offense and defense helped Utica double Alfred's time of possession.

The Pioneers, whose lone loss this season came to nationally ranked Cortland, continue to garner votes in the D3football.com and American Football Coaches Association Top 25 polls.

Offensive Overview

Utica's offense has been dynamic, ranking first in the Empire 8 and 11th in Division III in passing offense. Much of that success stems from senior quarterback Tyler Szalkowski, one of the best quarterbacks in Division III and last season's Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year. He is off to another hot start this year.

The Pioneers are averaging more than 35 points and 300 passing yards per game, plus 132 rushing yards per game, for a whopping 441 total yards per game. The unit is also very good on third down, on fourth down and in the red zone. Utica's offense is arguably the best in the Empire 8 and has no real weaknesses.

Defensive Overview

Utica's defense has been impressive as well, holding opponents to just 15 points per game.

The defensive line is one of Utica's best position groups. The Pioneers have 20 sacks this season and have recorded three or more in all but two games. Senior Jordyn Davis, who has 15 career sacks and 21.5 tackles for a loss, leads the group.

Utica's defense is also exceptional at taking the ball away through the air, with an astounding 14 interceptions through seven games. The Pioneers have also recovered seven fumbles.

The Pioneers have struggled at time this season against the run, as they are allowing 125 yards on the ground per game. Cortland (235), Alfred State (229) and Washington and Jefferson (156) all amassed more than 150 yards rushing against the Pioneers. However, Utica has been better in this area in recent weeks, holding each of its last two opponents under 60 yards rushing.

Players to Watch

No. 0 Jordyn Davis (Sr., DL) – Davis is coming off Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Alfred, and recognition is nothing new for him. He was an All-Empire 8 third-team selection as a sophomore and a first-team pick as a junior. This season, Davis has 28 total tackles, including six tackles for loss. He has also recorded five sacks, two pass breakups, five quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.
