PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Avery McLaughlin and Sydney Byrns scored, and the St. John Fisher field hockey team didn't allow a single shot in a 2-0 Empire 8 win over Keuka on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 8-9 overall (5-4 Empire 8) and enter the Empire 8 Championship Tournament as the No. 5 seed.
How it Happened
Fisher controlled play from the opening whistle but needed until the second quarter to break through. Keuka goalkeeper Khadeeja Reed stopped Mary Kate McPhee three minutes in. The Cardinals then got three shots off their first two penalty corners midway through the quarter, but McPhee's attempt was blocked, Ashley Pospiech made a defensive save on McLaughlin, and Holly Stuart's shot went wide.
McLaughlin broke the scoreless tie 2:24 into the second quarter, 10 seconds after checking back into the game. Keuka kept it a one-goal game the rest of the half. Macie Browning made a defensive save on Makayla Vanderpool, and Reed stopped McPhee again with under two minutes left before halftime.
The Wolves changed goalkeepers at the break, and Abby Clark stopped McLaughlin off a corner early in the third. Fisher kept up the pressure with six penalty corners in the quarter and doubled its lead with 1:01 left in the period, when Byrns finished a feed from McPhee.
The Cardinals earned three more corners in the fourth quarter and kept Keuka without a shot to close out the shutout.
