PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Freshman guard Natalie Mai scored 16 points in 20 minutes of action off the bench as the St. John Fisher women's basketball team earned a 54-47 victory over Elmira College on Saturday.
The Cardinals moved to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in Empire 8 Conference play with the victory, their third in a row. Elmira, which suffered its third straight loss, dropped to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in the E8.
Mai finished an efficient 6-of-9 from the field, knocking down 4-of-6 attempts from 3-point range along the way. Senior guard Hannah Ferguson (13 points) and junior forward Danielle Seamon (11 points) also reached double figures for the Cardinals.
How It Happened
Fisher and Elmira traded baskets throughout the first half, as neither team held a lead larger than five points. The Cardinals held a 16-13 edge at the end of the first quarter and led by five, 27-22, late in the second quarter after Mai scored eight points over three possessions, drilling a pair of triples and making a layup.
Elmira trimmed Fisher's lead to two, 27-25, before halftime and tied the score early in the third quarter. The Cardinals pushed their lead to a game-high eight points after that, but Elmira closed the frame on a 9-1 run to make it a one-point game, 40-39.
Ferguson made a jumper, and Seamon converted on a layup to push Fisher's lead to five early in the fourth quarter. Elmira stayed within striking distance down the stretch and came within three points, 50-47, on an Aynsley Belcher layup with less than two minutes remaining.
After a timeout, Ferguson knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals some breathing room with a six-point lead. Fisher kept Elmira off the board in the final minute to preserve the victory.
