ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior guard Presleigh Brunner scored 22 points to surpass 1,000 for her collegiate career while leading the St. John Fisher women's basketball team to a 60-47 victory over Hartwick on Friday night at Lambros Arena.
The Cardinals improved to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in Empire 8 Conference play with the victory, their fifth in a row. Hartwick, which dropped to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in the E8, has lost its last six contests.
Brunner had one of her most efficient shooting performances of the season and matched her career-high in field goals made (11-of-19). She scored 11 points in the first half and eight in the second, surpassing 1,000 career points with a layup in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore guard Valerosa Gambitta and senior guard Hannah Ferguson also scored in double figures. Gambitta scored a career-high 14 points while shooting 6-of-8 overall (1-of-1 from three), while Ferguson, who shot 6-of-10 from the field, also had 14. Junior forward Danielle Seamon pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and scored six points, and senior guard Julia Perales had 10 rebounds with five assists.
How It Happened
Brunner knocked down 3-of-4 shots for six points in the first quarter, which ended with the Cardinals leading by two, 10-8. The Cardinals opened the second quarter on a 14-0 run to push their lead to 24-8 behind six more points from Brunner, three each from Gambitta and Ferguson and two from Seamon.
Hartwick closed the gap to six, 28-22, just before halftime but fell behind by double digits again in the third quarter. Fisher went on a 9-0 surge in less than two minutes to gain a 15-point lead, 45-30. Brunner finished the quarter with six points, while Ferguson and Gambitta had five and four, respectively.
Gambitta scored seven points in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals maintained an 11- to 14-point lead and closed out a 13-point win. Ferguson had four points in the final frame.
