Geneseo Sneaks By Men's Soccer 2-1

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher men's soccer team got a few unfriendly bounces in the second half of a 2-1 loss to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals dropped to 0-6-1 overall (0-1-1 Empire 8 Conference), while Geneseo improved to 4-3-1 (2-0-1 E8).

How It Happened

  • Michael Ruggiero gave the Knights a 1-0 lead just more than 10 minutes in, sneaking a shot past Fisher goalkeeper Parker Stusek after taking a feed from Dylan Thody.

  • The Cardinals tied the score with about seven minutes left in the first half when junior Collin Gannon's corner kick attempt bounced off a Geneseo defender's head over goalkeeper Max Crothall for a score.

  • For as fortunate as the Cardinals were on that play, seemingly every bounce and break went against them in the second half. Geneseo regained the lead after about two minutes of action, as Thody found himself all alone with Stusek for a goal after receiving a long pass from Nathan Shin that bounced by a pair of Fisher defenders.

  • Later in the half, the Cardinals came close to notching the equalizer twice in a span of about eight minutes. A shot by sophomore Michael Linder bounced off the post at 61:17, and a header by Gannon nailed the crossbar at 69:24.

  • Crothall made a pair of saves in the final 11 minutes as the Knights held off the Cardinals to secure the victory.

Game Notes

  • Stusek made a pair of saves.

  • The Cardinals finished with a slight edge in chances, attempting 14 shots (six on goal) to Geneseo's 12 (four on goal).
