PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher field hockey team opened Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Russell Sage at Growney Stadium.

Three different players scored goals, and sophomore midfielder Sydney Byrns tallied a pair of assists in the victory, which moved the Cardinals to 3-2 overall. The Gators fell to 2-3 overall (1-1 Empire 8).

How it Happened

  • A little over two minutes into the game, sophomore Avery McLaughlin scored her first collegiate goal on a perfectly placed feed from Byrns.

  • Just before the opening quarter ended, junior defender Caitlyn Mahoney connected with sophomore attacker Sam Current to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0. The goal marked Current's fourth of the season.
