HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher baseball team fell 3-2 to Houghton on Friday night to start their three-game weekend road set. The Cardinals fell to 20-16-1 overall (14-7-1 Empire 8), while Houghton improved to 20-18 (10-12 Empire 8).

St. John Fisher 2, Houghton 3

The Cardinals' pitching staff allowed only seven hits and one earned run while striking out fifteen Highlander hitters in another strong effort.

Sean Cleary started the game on the mound for Fisher, allowing one hit and striking out two over 2.2 innings of work. Patrick McGuire came in relief and struck out seven, allowed only three hits and no earned runs (one unearned) over 3.2 innings.

Matt Culjak threw the last 2.1 innings for the Cardinals. He allowed three hits and struck out six Houghton batters.

The Highlanders capitalized on miscues from the Fisher defense, eventually pushing across the tying and winning runs in the ninth inning.

Down 1-0 in the seventh, the Cardinals tied the game when Brendan Bucello drew a bases-loaded walk. In the top half of the ninth, a Jackson Frey double, an Austin Droge walk and a Bucello single loaded the bases before Jordan Perry drew a walk to put Fisher ahead 2-1.

Houghton scored the tying run on a Cardinal defensive error and later pushed the winning run across with two outs on a Nate Hall single.
