COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher softball team slugged seven home runs and held Hartwick scoreless in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon at the Cooperstown All-Star Village.
The Cardinals improved to 12-9 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8 Conference with the pair of victories. Hartwick dropped to 5-13 (0-4 Empire 8).
Game 1: St. John Fisher 8, Hartwick 0 (5 innings)
Senior pitcher Ainsley Evanetski held Hartwick to two hits and struck out 12 batters as she went the distance for the five-inning shutout victory, her fifth pitching win of the season. She did not allow a walk.
Sophomore Emily McManus put the Cardinals ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning, ripping a single to right center to drive in junior Madi Rose, who swiped second base after being hit by a pitch to start the ballgame. Senior catcher Mari Spitz doubled to start the second and later scored to extend Fisher's lead to 2-0 on senior Amalia DeMartino's ground out to second.
The Cardinals broke the game open in the third inning. McManus hit a two-run home run to make it 5-0, and DeMartino drove in Spitz with a single up the middle to add one more to the Cardinals' lead.
Sophomore Taylor Shackleton piled on two more runs in the fourth inning with her third home run of the season.
McManus had two hits in three at-bats and drove in three runs. Spitz and Rose, who reached 100 hits for her career, both went 2 for 2 at the plate.
In her last five starts, Evanetski has allowed just four runs (three earned) on 15 hits. She has struck out 52 batters and walked seven.
Game 2: St. John Fisher 13, Hartwick 0 (5 innings)
The Cardinals had nine hits, including five home runs, to power past Hartwick 13-0 in the second game of the doubleheader. McManus, who had her first collegiate multi-home run game, drove in a career-high five runs.
Shackleton started the drubbing in the first inning, driving in Rose with a double to left. McManus (two RBI) and Spitz (solo) then hit back-to-back home runs to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.
In the second inning, senior Cassidy Evanetski reached on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch. McManus clobbered a three-run home run later in the inning to push Fisher's lead to 8-0.
Evanetski hit a two-run home run in the third, and junior Isabella Mahar belted a solo homer in the fourth, extending the Fisher lead to 12 runs. Junior Hallie Lorimer plated freshman Julia Hollister with a single in the fourth to make the score 13-0.
Senior Cassidy Ormond pitched four innings and earned her fifth victory of the season. She allowed one hit, amassed seven strikeouts and walked one batter.
