ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher softball team (14-9, 7-1 Empire 8) outscored Elmira (3-13, 1-4 Empire 8) 29-2 in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Holding Point Softball Complex.
Game 1: St. John Fisher 7, Elmira 2
After allowing a first-inning home run, St. John Fisher's Ainsley Evanetski settled in and dominated en route to her sixth pitching win of the season. The senior struck out a career-high 18 batters and walked just one while pitching all seven innings.
Evanetski has struck out 46 batters over her last three appearances. She's allowed only three runs on nine hits and three walks in those games.
The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the second inning on a Katie Mannis single that scored Mari Spitz. Emily McManus gave Fisher the lead in the third inning, ripping a double that scored Maddie Donlin from second base. Spitz then doubled home McManus to make it 3-1 and scored later in the frame when Tori LoPresto reached on a fielder's choice.
Maddy Schubach added a run to Fisher's lead with an RBI ground out in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh on McManus's solo home run and LoPresto's single that scored Amalia DeMartino.
McManus and DeMartino led Fisher with three hits apiece in the ballgame. Mannis and Spitz each had a pair of knocks.
