PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher baseball team won a pair of road games in its home ballpark on Sunday afternoon, beating SUNY Poly 13-0 and 21-3 in a doubleheader at Dugan Yard.
The Cardinals improved to 11-11 overall and 6-2 in Empire 8 Conference play with the victories. Poly dropped to 9-12 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
The doubleheader, initially scheduled to be played at SUNY Poly on Wednesday, had to be moved to Dugan Yard due to field conditions.
Game 1: St. John Fisher 13, SUNY Poly 0 (7 innings)
Junior pitcher Ethan Fulton struck out a season-high eight batters, didn't issue any walks and allowed just three hits while pitching all seven innings in Fisher's 13-0 victory over SUNY Poly in the first game of the doubleheader.
Junior Jack Griffin and freshman Jordan Perry each drove in three runs, while senior Jimmy McCardle drove in two. The Cardinals pounded 15 hits as a team.
Fisher broke the game open with five runs in the opening frame. Griffin (walk), Perry (single), junior Jake Crantz (walk), graduate senior Andrew Roman (sacrifice fly) and junior Benjamin Huckans (single) drove in runs as Fisher brought 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
The Cardinals added two more runs to their lead in the second, with one coming via sophomore Brendan Bucello's first collegiate home run.
Perry hit his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning to push Fisher's lead to eight runs. An inning later, Griffin ripped a three-run home run, his fourth long ball of the season, to make it 11-0.
The Cardinals scored on a balk in the sixth inning and added one more run in the seventh on Perry's sacrifice fly to left field.
Game 2: St. John Fisher 21, Suny Poly 3 (7 innings)
The Cardinals set season highs in hits (20), runs (21) and RBI (20) as they drubbed the Wildcats again in the second ballgame of the day at Dugan Yard.
Fisher got another strong starting pitching performance, as sophomore Robert Leach allowed just one run over 4.2 innings on the mound. He allowed six hits, issued two talks and struck out eight batters, a career high.
Griffin, Perry and Crantz each drove in four runs for the Cardinals. Huckans, sophomore Jackson Frey and senior Mario Cubello plated two apiece.
Griffin (five at-bats) and Perry (six at-bats) each had four hits, all of them singles that scored at least one run. Crantz had two doubles and a three-run home run in four at-bats.
The Cardinals, who already led 10-0 through four innings, poured it on in the top half of the fifth with five runs on 11 hits and two errors to push their lead to 21 runs. Six players drove in at least one run in the frame, led by Griffin (3 RBI) and Perry (2 RBI).
