Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Newman, Rauh Lead Men's Volleyball To Four-Set Win Over Roosevelt

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The No. 13 St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team took down Division II Roosevelt University in four sets on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Barry University Tournament.

The Cardinals (14-3 in Division III) improved to 16-5 overall and 2-2 on their Florida spring break trip. Roosevelt dropped to 1-10.

Senior setter Gavin Newman led the Cardinals with nine service aces – the most by a player in program history in a four-set match. Senior middle blocker Ian Rauh paced Fisher in kills (13), hitting percentage (.500) and blocks (7). His seven blocks marked a season-high.

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals, who led by two to three points at various points, dropped the first set 25-22. Roosevelt finished the set on a 10-5 run.

  • Behind three service aces from senior setter Gavin Newman, the Cardinals scored four straight points in the middle of the second set to take a 17-11 lead.

  • The Cardinals scored five straight points to end the set and secure a 25-17 victory. Junior Casey Jackson and senior Ian Rauh each had kills in that stretch.

  • The Cardinals had a comfortable seven-point lead (22-15) and needed just three more points to secure a third-set victory. It wasn't easy – and perhaps that's an understatement.

  • Roosevelt went on an 8-1 run to take a 24-23 lead and needed just one more point to win. The Cardinals avoided disaster, tying the score on graduate senior Griffin Stella's kill and taking a 25-24 lead on a Roosevelt error.

  • From that point, there were five ties and four lead changes before the Cardinals settled things. Ian Rauh made it 30-29 with a kill before a Roosevelt attacking error finally ended the set and gave the Cardinals a 31-29 victory.

  • The fourth set proved to be much less dramatic, as the Cardinals took control about midway through with a 4-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. They led by seven, 19-12, minutes later after junior Aiden Calhoun's kill.

  • Roosevelt never pulled closer than six points as Fisher wrapped up a 25-18 victory in the fourth set to secure the match.

Other Match Notes

  • Newman had 37 assists, six digs, four blocks and two kills in addition to his nine service aces.

  • Newman has had 30 or more assists in nine of the Cardinals' 21 matches.

  • Sophomore Sonepith Keoviengsamay slammed a career-high 10 kills and hit .318.

  • Jackson contributed eight kills, while sophomore Connor Holmes had seven.

  • Jackson recorded a career-high six blocks.

  • Senior libero Trace La Robardiere tied his career high with 17 digs.
