PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher baseball team ended a soggy weekend with a 15-3 victory over Keuka College in a game shortened to five innings by weather at Dugan Yard.
The Cardinals salvaged the weekend series with the victory, avoiding a three-game sweep to improve to 9-11 overall (4-2 Empire 8). Keuka fell to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the Empire 8.
How It Happened
The Cardinals fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning but came right back and pounced on the Wolves in the bottom half of the opening frame.
Keuka starting pitcher Hunter Corkran could only record one out before being pulled, as Jackson Frey started the half inning with a homer to right, Mario Cubello singled to left and Jack Griffin belted a two-run homer to right to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead. Jordan Perry came across to score on a fielding error later in the inning to make it 4-2.
After Keuka got a run back in the second, the Cardials again doubled up their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Brendan Bucello doubled home Cubello and, after advancing to third on a passed ball, scored on Griffin's sacrifice fly to right field to put Fisher ahead 6-3.
After being held scoreless in the third, the Cardinals plated three in the fourth. Griffin drove in Cubello to make it 7-3 before Crantz roped a double that plated two runs, extending the Cardinals' lead to six runs (9-3).
The Cardinals scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth, with three coming on Perry's three-run blast to right field. Bucello, Griffin and Scott Sleurs drove in the other runs for the Cardinals in the frame.
Benjamin Huckans, who entered the game in relief of starter Patrick McGuire, allowed only one hit and walked three batters while working three scoreless innings. He earned credit for the victory, his first of the year.
