Softball Splits With Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team (8-8) split its doubleheader against Ithaca College (10-3) on Friday afternoon at Kostrinsky Field.

Game 1: St. John Fisher 6, Ithaca 1

After allowing a solo home run in the second inning, St. John Fisher senior pitcher Ainsley Evanetski limited Ithaca to just two more hits in a 6-1 victory. Evanetski, who earned credit for her third win of the season, struck out seven and didn't walk any batters while pitching all seven innings.

The Cardinals tied the game at one in the third inning on Maddie Donlin's double to right center and took the lead in the fourth when two base runners scored on an Ithaca fielding error. Cassidy Evanetski extended the lead to 4-1 later in the fourth, bringing home Katie Mannis on a single through the left side.

Mari Spitz, who hit three two-run homers in a doubleheader against Houghton on Thursday, added key insurance runs with a two-run double to right center that put the Cardinals ahead 6-1 in the seventh.

Donlin and Spitz led the Cardinals with two hits apiece in the ballgame.

Game 2: Ithaca 5, St. John Fisher 2

Ithaca scored five unanswered runs en route to a 5-2 win after Donlin put the Cardinals ahead 1-0 with a double in the top half of the third inning.

The Bombers scored two runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the sixth but could only push across one run, which came on Taylor Shackleton's two-out walk.

Ithaca pitcher Mady Rowell worked five innings and earned credit for the victory. She struck two batters and allowed just four hits.
