CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Ainsley Evanetski pitched another gem as the St. John Fisher softball team beat Cortland 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Cardinals (9-8, 2-0 Empire 8) got back over .500 on the season with the non-conference victory. Cortland fell to 4-10.
Evanetski allowed two runs (only one earned) on six hits and two walks while pitching all seven innings. She struck out six batters.
The Red Dragons got on the board first in the bottom half of the second when Shelby LaMont, who reached on a single with one out in the inning, scored on Lainie Ornstein's fielder's choice.
The Cardinals came right back to tie the game in the next half inning. Senior Cassidy Evanetski was hit by a pitch to start the third and advanced two bases when junior Madi Rose reached on a throwing error. Senior Maddie Donlin plated Evanetski with a sacrifice fly to right field.
After Ainsley Evanetski worked a quick bottom of the third, seniors Amalia DeMartino (walk) and Tori LoPresto (base hit) reached base with one out in the fourth. DeMartino scored on senior Katie Mannis' double to left, and LoPresto came across on Cassidy Evanetski's fielder's choice, giving Fisher a 3-1 lead.
The Cardinals broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs, three of which came via senior catcher Mari Spitz's homer to left field. Mannis drilled Fisher's second long ball of the inning three batters later to extend the Cardinals' lead to 7-1.
Cortland had two on with one out in the sixth but managed just one run, which scored on a Fisher throwing error. Evanetski set the Red Dragons down in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
