Carpenter Tallies Nine Points As No. 24 Women's Lacrosse Pounds Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 24 St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team extended its perfect start to the season with a commanding 19-4 win over SUNY Cortland on Saturday at Grady Field.

The Cardinals improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2021 when they lost just twice all season and reached the NCAA Division III Semifinals. Cortland fell to 2-3.

How It Happened

  • Senior Emma Biel broke a 2-2 late in the first period to start a string of six unanswered goals that put Fisher in firm control of the game. 
  • Senior Sydney Carpenter scored back-to-back goals to open the second quarter to put Fisher ahead 5-2. Sophomore Ellie Leisen and seniors Hanna Kumpf and Farrah Zalla scored before the period ended to make it 8-2. 
  • Cortland struck first in the third, but Fisher responded with another surge, scoring eight unanswered goals. Carpenter netted two more goals, while Kumpf, Leisen, senior Mary Fiorentino, junior Kaley Griffin and sophomore Chelsea Lopata each added one to extend the lead to 15-3.
  • Fisher continued to roll in the fourth, with Carpenter capping her standout day with two more tallies. Freshman Ally Stank scored her first collegiate goal late in the quarter. 

Game Notes

  • Carpenter tied her career high with nine total points (six goals, three assists). That total is tied for fourth on the program's single-game points list.

  • Fisher has now had a player record three or more goals in 13 consecutive regular-season games, a streak that dates back to March 27, 2024.

  • Kumpf recorded a hat trick (three goals) and tallied an assist. She's scored three times or more in three of the Cardinals' first five games. 

  • Leisen (two goals, two assists), Griffin (two goals, one assist) and Lopata (two goals) also had multi-point performances

  • Goalkeeper Kaylee Gadol made a season-high eight saves. 

  • The Cardinals dominated the draw, finishing with a 16-10 advantage in draw controls. Kumpf accounted for seven of them, a career-high.
