Softball Beats Spalding, DePauw on Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The St. John Fisher University softball team (4-0) beat Spalding University (Kentucky) 11-7 and DePauw University 1-0 on Saturday in the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic.

Game 1: St. John Fisher University 11, Spalding 7

Emily McManus drove in two with a single, and Mari Spitz and Katie Mannis each hit three-run homers as part of an eight-run first inning for the Cardinals. They added three more runs in the fourth inning – with one coming via Isabella Mahar's first collegiate home run – to take an 11-3 lead. Alyssa Dawson and Gracie Curella drove in the other runs in that inning.

Spalding scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut its deficit to 11-7, but Fisher kept the comeback attempt from getting any more interesting than that.

Senior Cassidy Ormond, who pitched five innings, earned the victory, her first of the season. Senior Ainsley Evanetski came on in relief in the fifth and struck out five batters.

Game 2: St. John Fisher 1, DePauw 0

Sophomore pitcher Molly Kuhn needed just one run of support in the Cardinals' second game of the day, as she breezed through the DePauw lineup in her first collegiate complete-game shutout.

Sophomore Taylor Shackleton accounted for the game's only run with a solo homer in the bottom half of the second inning. The Cardinals had just three more hits the rest of the ballgame.

Kuhn gave up five hits and walked three batters. DePauw left three runners in scoring position, including two on third base.
