Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball's Season Ends With Loss To Geneseo In E8 Semis

GENESEO, N.Y. – The No. 3-seeded St. John Fisher women's basketball team struggled in the paint in a 72-54 loss to No. 2-seeded SUNY Geneseo in the Empire 8 Semifinals on Wednesday night at the Carl Schrader Gymnasium.

The Cardinals, who ended the season 19-8 overall, were looking to become the first team in Empire 8 history to win four straight conference championships. Geneseo (21-6), which beat Fisher handily twice this season, will face No. 1-seeded SUNY Brockport in the E8 title game on Saturday afternoon (game time TBA).

Just like the first meeting back on Feb. 7, the Knights dominated the Cardinals inside and played stifling defense. Geneseo outscored Fisher by 24 in paint points (42-18) and kept Sidney Tomasso and Katie Moravec, the Cardinals' leading scorers this season, in check. Tomasso finished with eight points and shot 1 of 13 from the field, while Moravec had 13 while shooting 4 of 8 from the field.

How It Happened

  • The Knights, who never trailed, quickly took control of the game, going on a 10-0 run in the first quarter to take a 12-2 lead. They finished the first quarter up 21-11.

  • Maggie McGrane drilled a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 run that extended Geneseo's lead to 17 points (28-11) early in the second quarter.

  • Senior guard Kelly Moravec kept the game from getting further out of hand before halftime, scoring 14 of Fisher's 20 points in the second quarter while shooting 3 of 5 from three to trim the deficit down to eight (39-31).

  • The Cardinals never pulled any closer than that, though, as Geneseo went on a 14-1 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The Knights led by 14 to 18 points the rest of the way.

Game Notes

  • Kelly Moravec, in her final collegiate game, set career-highs in points (23), field goals made (7 of 16) and 3-pointers made (6 of 13) in 35 minutes off the bench. She scored 14 of those 23 points in the second quarter alone.

  • Her six 3-pointers made marked the most by a Fisher player in a game this season.

  • The Cardinals had one of their worst shooting performances of the season, finishing 17 of 67 overall (25.4%) and 6 of 28 from three (21.4%). Geneseo shot 50.9% from the field.

  • Three Geneseo players – Grace Galgano (20), Audrey Hintz (15) and Mackenzie Reigle (11) – scored in double figures.
