Baseball Beats Maritime Again To Finish Opening Weekend

BALTIMORE – Senior outfielder Jimmy McCardle had two hits and drove in a pair of runs as the St. John Fisher University baseball team wrapped up its first weekend of the season with a 12-8 victory over SUNY Maritime on Sunday at Johns Hopkins' Babb Field.

The Cardinals (2-1) won both of their games against Maritime this weekend.

Sophomore Robert Leach started on the mound for the Cardinals and went four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. He ended his day with four strikeouts and no walks.

Junior Conner Walker worked one inning in relief and got credit for the victory. He entered the game in the top of the eighth inning and kept the game tied at eight, striking out three straight batters to keep the go-ahead run stranded at second base.

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals led 3-0 after the first inning, getting two of their runs on Jake Crantz's single to left. Senior Mario Cubello added another run to Fisher's lead in the second inning when he plated freshman Ryan Vanderlip on a sacrifice fly to center.

  • After Maritime scored two in the top of the fourth inning, junior Jack Griffin extended the Cardinals' lead back to four (6-2) with a two-run single to center in the bottom half. Cubello made it 7-2 later that inning, coming across to score on a double steal.

  • Aided by a two-out Fisher error, Maritime rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at seven.

  • The Cardinals regained the lead in the sixth inning when Vanderlip came across to score on a wild pitch, but Maritime came back to tie the game again in the top of the seventh on Randy Ventura's RBI groundout.

  • McCardle's two-run double capped a four-run eighth inning that gave the Cardinals a 12-8 lead. Junior Michael Blower shut Maritime down in the ninth, recording the final three outs to nail down the victory.

Game Notes

  • McCardle doubled, tripled and scored a run in addition to driving in two.

  • Vanderlip had two hits, including a double, and scored a pair of runs.

  • The Cardinals had four extra-base hits as a team.

  • The Cardinals' defense turned two double plays.

  • Walker recorded his first career victory on the mound.
