Women's Lacrosse Dominates Rochester in Season Opener

VICTOR, N.Y.-  The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team (1-0) put on an offensive clinic to defeat the University of Rochester (0-1) 20-6 in its season opener on Saturday afternoon at the Pinnacle Athletic Campus and Events Center. The Cardinals have won four of their last five games against the Yellowjackets. 

The Cardinals had five players with three or more goals and three players with three assists. 

How It Happened

  • Fisher finished off the first period up 5-1 and never looked back. In the second period, the Cardinals scored six more goals to end the first half with an 11-2 lead. 

  • The play of the game came in the third quarter when senior midfielder and two-time All-American Sydney Carpenter found fellow senior midfielder Hanna Kumpf for a goal with a behind-the-back pass. 

  • The Cardinals scored nine more goals in the second half en route to the 20-6 victory. 

Game Notes 

  • Kumpf and Mary Fiorentino led the way with four goals a piece for the Cardinals. Carpenter, Farrah Zalla and Emma Biel each scored three goals. Biel tied her career high with the three tallies. 

  • Kaley Griffin, Sydney Closinski and Ellie Leisen all contributed with a goal each. 

  • Carpenter, the two-time Empire 8 Player of the Year, had a game-high four caused turnovers. 

  • Carpenter, who has the most draw controls in Empire 8 history, recorded a game-high five draw controls. 

  • Leisen recorded a career-best three assists. 

  • Carpenter and Chelsea Lopata also had three assists. 

  • Goalkeeper Maggie Cross anchored the defense with six saves.

The Cardinals return to action against St. Lawrence University at Growney Stadium at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
