BALTIMORE – The St. John Fisher University baseball team opened its season at the Baltimore Invitational on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader against SUNY Maritime and No. 6 Johns Hopkins.Â
In game one, the Cardinals came out on top in a pitchers' duel, squeaking out a 2-1 victory over Maritime. In game 2, against host Johns Hopkins, the Cardinals fell 7-3.Â

After a scoreless first frame, a leadoff single in the top of the second by Ben Huckans led to an eventual sacrifice fly to left field from Jimmy McCardle that gave Fisher a 1-0 lead.Â

The game remained 1-0 until a Jackson Frey single scored Andrew Roman to put the Cardinals ahead by two runs in the fifth inning.Â

Maritime was held scoreless for nearly eight innings, as a two-out walk and two singles led to its first run of the ballgame.Â

Anthony Lang recorded the last four outs to close out the season-opening victory for the Cardinals.Â

After a clean top of the first inning, Johns Hopkins scored two runs in its first turn at the plate.

The game remained 2-0 until a leadoff walk by Jack Griffin, a single up-the-middle by Jackson Frey and Jake Crantz reached on an error. Andrew Roman came up to bat with the bases loaded and ripped a ground-rule double to tie the game at two.

Hopkins came back with three more in the bottom half of the fourth to regain the lead.Â

Andrew Roman's solo homerun was the third and final run for the Cardinals in the top of the seventh inning.
