No. 14 Men's Lacrosse Ready To Open 2025 Season Against Haverford

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher men's lacrosse team opens the 2025 season against Haverford at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Pinnacle Athletic Campus and Events Center in Victor, New York.

2024 Season In Review 

The St. John Fisher men's lacrosse team finished 14-8 overall and 6-0 in Empire 8 Conference play in 2024. The Cardinals won the Empire 8 title against Nazareth in dominating fashion, beating the Golden Flyers 20-8 to punch their ticket to the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. Fisher upset Wesleyan 15-13 and St. Lawrence 11-10 during a magical run to the NCAA Quarterfinals, where it fell to eventual national champion Tufts. 

Attacker Matthew Kemmis and defender Jack Cornell earned second-team USILA All-American honors last season. Goalkeeper Ben Hammond, midfielder Jordan Leuze and short-stick defensive midfielder Connor Mesh garnered honorable mention All-American honors from the USILA. 

The Cardinals took home four of the five major Empire 8 awards in 2024. Kemmis was named the 2024 E8 Offensive Player of the Year; Cornell Defensive Player of the Year and first-year midfielder Sean Donaldson Rookie of the Year. Dobbins and his staff won Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year. 

Records and Streaks 

  • The Cardinals have won five straight Empire 8 Conference championships. 
  • The Cardinals have won 37 straight games against Empire 8 Conference opponents (regular season and postseason). 

Five Cardinals Named Preseason All-Americans

Fiver Fisher standouts earned preseason All-American recognition from various lacrosse publications. That group includes Cornell, Leuze, Donaldson, Mesh and attacker Timmy Salit

Cornell: Second-team USILA, second-team USA Lacrosse, third-team Inside Lacrosse… The senior was second in the Empire 8 in caused turnovers per game (2.39) and second on the team in ground balls (64) last season. 

Leuze: Third-team USILA and honorable mention Inside Lacrosse….  Leuze scored 25 goals and tallied 26 assists for 51 points (fourth on the team) across 16 games (nine starts) last year. The fifth-year senior midfielder earned first-team All-Empire 8 honors.  

Mesh: Honorable mention USA Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse… The defensive midfielder, also a 2024 first-team All-Empire 8 selection, has caused 26 turnovers, dished out eight assists and scored four goals in his collegiate career. 

Salit: Honorable mention Inside Lacrosse… Salit, a fifth-year senior attacker, finished third on the team in points (57) with 31 goals and 26 assists in 2024. He earned second-team all-conference honors.

Donaldson: Honorable mention USA Lacrosse… Donaldson, a sophomore midfielder, scored 31 goals and tallied 14 assists for 45 total points over 22 games last season.
