ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Derek Bernardino (133lbs), sophomore Trevor Bishop (149lbs) and junior Paul Lichter (157lbs) placed second in their weight classes as the St. John Fisher wrestling team took third out of 14 teams in the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational on Saturday.
The Cardinals, who amassed 132 team points, had five placers in all. Senior Torin Bishop, third at 165 pounds, and junior Braydon Vandenberg, fourth at 197 pounds, were the other two.
Williams College (192 points) took first in the team race, while host RIT (156 points) finished in second.
Bernardino began the day with a 22-9 technical fall over Dominic LaConte (Wesleyan). He took down Carver Moyer (Norwich) 19-7 by major decision in his second match and battled for a 7-3 decision over Jack Borowiek (Oneonta) in his semifinal bout. Bernardino fell 12-10 by decision to RIT's Jackson Rush in the 133-pound final match.
Trevor Bishop snuck past Isaac Judson (Williams) 3-0 by decision in his first match before winning 18-0 by technical fall in 4:10 over Jake Brown (Penn State Behrend), 8-0 by major decision over Brett Thomson (Scranton) and by fall in 58 seconds over Ty Trickle (Trinity). He lost a 1-0 battle to Caleb Seyfried (Williams) in the 149-pound championship bout.
Lichter took down Alex Rivard (Wesleyan) 18-3 by technical fall, Jacob Schweigard (Oneonta) 7-0 by decision and Konrad Haugeto (RIT) 7-1 by decision before advancing past the semifinals via medical forfeiture. He lost 10-1 by major decision to Peter Kane (Williams) in the 157-pound first-place match.
Torin Bishop won his first three matches, recording two wins by fall, before falling to Mason Savitz (Penn State Behrend) 14-2 by major decision. He claimed two forfeit wins on the backside of the bracket to finish in third at 165 pounds.
Vandenberg, ranked 14th in the country at 197 pounds, ripped off three victories to start the day but fell 4-2 by decision to Kevin Rodriguez (Norwich) in his fourth bout. On the backside of the bracket, he beat David LaPrade (Williams) by fall in 3:58 before losing by fall in 2:47 to Abraham Keep (Penn State Behrend) in the third-place match.
