Five Players Score In Double Figures To Lead Men's Basketball Past SUNY Canton

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Five players scored in double figures to lead the St. John Fisher men's basketball team to a 90-72 victory over SUNY Canton on Tuesday night at Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.

The Cardinals, who had their best all-around offensive performance of the season to this point, improved to 4-5 overall with the victory, while Canton dropped to 1-4.

Fisher set season highs in points, shooting percentage (52.9%) and field goals made (37-of-70). The Cardinals also shot 50% (10-of-20) from 3-point range and outscored Canton 46-28 in the paint, 22-9 on second-chance points and 45-18 in bench points.

Junior forward Jonathan McCaffrey led the Cardinals and matched his career-high with 16 points while shooting 7-of-10 overall, including 1-of-1 from three. Junior guard Giovanni Schillaci sank 3-of-5 3-pointers and shot 5-of-10 from the field on the way to a career-high 15 points.

Sophomore guard Andrew Violante, who also drilled three triples, added 12 points to go with three rebounds and five steals. Sophomore guard Jack Janes had a career-high 11 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, and sophomore forward Maximus Michalski chipped in 10 points with five rebounds, three blocks and a steal.

How It Happened

The Cardinals began the game on a 6-0 run, but the hot start didn't last long as Canton used a 16-4 surge over about three minutes to take a 16-10 lead.

Schillaci and McCaffrey helped the Cardinals regain their rhythm offensively during an 11-3 push that put Fisher back in front, 21-19. Schillaci scored six points during that stretch, while McCaffrey added four.

The Roos briefly retook the lead, but Fisher tied the game at 23 with a Janes layup and took a three-point lead, 26-23, on a three-pointer from Violante. After Canton pulled even one more time later in the half, Fisher again had a quick response, as Janes and McCaffrey nailed triples to put the Cardinals ahead 41-35. The Cardinals, who stayed in front the rest of the way, took a 48-43 lead into halftime.

Behind four points from McCaffrey and freshman guard Mekhi Gidney, Fisher pushed its lead to 11 points, 60-49, with a 12-4 spurt in the early stages of the second half. The Cardinals maintained a comfortable advantage from there and eventually led by as many as 20.

Schillaci knocked down all three of his 3-pointers in the second half to lead Fisher with nine points. Michalski scored eight of his 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the frame.

Game Notes

  • Schillaci, Michalski and Violante combined for 37 of the Cardinals' 45 bench points.

  • The Cardinals shot better than 50% from the field in both halves, including 55.8% in the first frame.

  • Violante's five steals marked a career high.

  • Senior guard Max Schneider and sophomore guard Kyler Proper led Fisher with four assists apiece. Schneider, who shot 2-of-4 from three, added eight points.
