Top-Seeded Women's Volleyball Downs No. 8-Seeded Alfred

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's volleyball team began its postseason journey on Saturday afternoon at the Manning & Napier Varsity Gym with a sweep of No. 8-seeded Alfred in the first round of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament.

The top-seeded Cardinals (27-1), who have won 27 consecutive matches, set program records for wins (27) and sweeps (22) in a season during the rally scoring era (2001-present) with the victory. They will host No. 4-seeded SUNY Geneseo in the E8 semifinals at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

How It Happened

Freshman Kalyna Dannenberg led the Cardinals to a 25-13 victory in the first set, slamming six kills while hitting .600. She had three of those kills during a 9-2 run that put Fisher ahead 22-10.

The Cardinals took the second set 25-15 behind five service aces, including two apiece from sophomore Lydia Fraser and senior Marilyn Whitcavitch. After Alfred pulled within three, 16-13, the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run to take a commanding 22-13 lead. The Saxons committed eight attacking errors in the frame, with three coming during that decisive stretch.

Alfred did not go down easily in the final set, going almost point for point with Fisher until the latter stages.

The Cardinals imposed their will on the Saxons down the stretch, scoring seven consecutive points to prevail 25-18. Junior outside hitter Kaylene Noble pounded six kills and hit .333 in the frame, and senior setter Reilly Morrow tallied 13 assists.

Match Notes

  • The Cardinals improved to 36-2 since a four-set loss to Nazareth last October and won their 19th consecutive match against an Empire 8 opponent.

  • The Cardinals improved to 12-3 in Empire 8 Tournament matches since 2017.

  • The Cardinals' 27-match winning streak is the longest in program history during the rally scoring era.

  • The Cardinals have the second-longest active winning streak in Division III behind East Texas Baptist, which has won 29 in a row.

  • Dannenberg led the Cardinals in kills (12) and digs (11) as part of her ninth double-double of the season. She accounted for a team-high 14.5 points.

  • Noble, who tallied 11 points, had 11 kills while hitting .348. She has hit .300 or better in 19 of Fisher's 28 matches this season.

  • Junior Ana Gutman slammed six kills and hit a team-high .500 (min. 10 attacks).

  • Morrow finished with 33 assists, averaging 11 per set.

  • Senior libero Kiera Hartpence had 10 digs.
