PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women's basketball team opened the 2025 Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout with a 67-43 loss to the University of Rochester on Friday night inside Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.
Fisher fell to 1-4 on the new season, while the Yellowjackets snapped a three-game, season-opening losing streak with the victory.
How It Happened
Fisher held a 16–12 lead after the first quarter before Rochester outscored the Cardinals 26–9 in the second, swinging momentum for good. The Cardinals were plagued from start to finish by turnovers, as they committed 32 of them in the contest, with 11 coming in the second quarter. Rochester cashed in for 28 points on those chances.
Fisher shot just 17 of 46 overall, including 5 of 14 from 3-point range. The Cardinals also struggled shooting from the free-throw line, making just 4 of their 12 foul shots.
Presleigh Brunner led Fisher with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals. Valerosa Gambitta added nine points and five boards, while Hannah Ferguson chipped in eight points and two blocks.
Annelise Dexter led the Yellowjackers with 11 points while shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 1-of-2 from the foul line. Claire Groenewoud added 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting (1-of-3 from three).
Hazell Nickerson had five steals for Rochester, while Grace Corelli and Deniz Alparslan each had four. Groenewoud and Bridget Miller had three takeaways apiece.
