PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Three St. John Fisher University student-athletes have earned accolades for their performances last week, the Empire 8 Conference and the United Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Monday.
Sam Ciappa (Freshman, Men's Ice Hockey) – Empire 8/United College Hockey Conference Player of the Week
Ciappa led the Cardinals offensively with six points on three goals and three assists and was plus-6, guiding the team to a 2-0 weekend with wins over SUNY Morrisville and SUNY Cortland. He recorded two goals and one assist and was plus-3 in a 6-2 win over Morrisville, then added a power-play goal and two assists and was plus-3 in a 6-3 victory over Cortland.
Ciappa is the first player in Fisher men's hockey history to earn weekly honors.
Kalyna Dannenberg (Freshman, Women's Volleyball) – Empire 8 Rookie of the Week (x7)
Dannenberg led the Cardinals with 12 kills and 11 digs as part of her ninth double-double of the season in a sweep of Alfred on Saturday in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. She accounted for a team-high 14.5 points, averaging 4.83 per set.
The Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 27 matches and recorded their 22nd sweep of the season with the victory. They host SUNY Geneseo in the E8 Semifinals at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Trevor Sheehan (Senior, Wrestling) – Empire 8 Wrestler of the Week
Sheehan placed second in the 165-pound bracket as the Cardinals opened the season with a sixth-place team finish in the Racich Rumble at Ursinus College on Saturday.
Sheehan began the day with a 17-4 technical fall win over Jacob Ebaugh of Alvernia, earned an 18-3 by technical fall win over Jimmy Do of Camden County and won by fall in 5:39 over John Gleason of NYU in the quarterfinals. He advanced to the final with a 7-5 decision over Connor Powell of Johns Hopkins.
