PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team ended a frustrating season-opening stretch on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium, edging Alfred University 1-0 for its first victory of 2025.
The Cardinals moved to 1-7-1 overall (1-2-1 Empire 8 Conference) with the result. Alfred dropped to 4-5-1 (2-2-1 Empire 8) and suffered its second consecutive conference loss.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first half that saw just four shots on goal – two for each team – the Cardinals put one on the board early in the second half. Just more than two minutes in, freshman Jeremiah Strader headed a centering pass toward senior midfielder Reese Powers, who also used his head, pushing a shot past Alfred goalkeeper Tyler Mulholland to give Fisher a 1-0 lead.
The goal marked Powers' first since Fisher's 1-0 victory over RIT last September.
Fisher limited Alfred to four shots in the second half, and freshman goalkeeper Parker Stusek made a pair of saves. He finished the game with four total stops.
