BUFFALO, N.Y. – Forward Madelyn Wania scored three goals and had an assist as she piled up seven total points in the St. John Fisher University women's soccer team's dominant 8-0 victory over Buffalo State on Wednesday night at Coyer Field.
The Cardinals improved to 2-1 overall and won their second straight non-conference game after opening the season with a loss to Skidmore last Friday. Their eight goals marked the most they've scored in a game since a 9-0 win over Buffalo State in September 2021. It was the fifth time Fisher scored more than five goals in a game under Molly Romano, who became the program's head coach before the 2019 season.
Fisher's offensive eruption commenced soon after the game clock started running. Less than a minute into the contest, forward Riley Grimm scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Siobhan McMakin.
Wania, a transfer from the College of St. Rose, recorded her first point of the night about six minutes later, assisting midfielder Kate Rachwal on her first goal of the season. She scored two of her goals – including one off a penalty kick – before the half ended to put the Cardinals ahead 4-0.
Carli Maltbie, who was assisted by Grimm, made it 6-0 Cardinals with her second goal of the season less than 10 minutes into the second half. Wania scored her third goal unassisted just more than two minutes later.
Senior Emma Spelman scored Fisher's last two goals, the first assisted by Grimm, to put an exclamation mark on the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sofia Pantoja played more than 70 minutes and made one save. Junior Avery Byrnes played the final 17-plus minutes, making three saves.
