Football Set For First Road Test Of The Season At Wilkes

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – After starting the season with a pair of home games, the St. John Fisher football team (1-1) hit the road on Friday for the first time this season to face Wilkes University (1-2) at Schmidt Stadium in Wilkes Barre, Pa.

Brantley, Whitney In Sync

  • Named Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, senior wide receiver Jaylen Brantley set a Fisher single-game record with 249 yards receiving on six catches in a 42-40 win over Keystone last Saturday at Growney Stadium. He had touchdown receptions of 81 and 91 yards. 

  • His 91-yard score, which got the Cardinals on the board in the second quarter, was one of the longest plays from scrimmage in program history. Jimmy Smith's 97-yarder in 2007 is Fisher's longest receiving touchdown. 

  • Through two games, Brantley leads the Cardinals in catches (9), receiving yards (272) and touchdowns (2). 

  • In his second career start, sophomore quarterback Ryan Whitney completed 16 of 26 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns. He became the first Fisher quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards since Hunter Walsh threw for 324 in a 31-28 win over Alfred in November 2019. 

  • Whitney's 339 yards marked the most by a Fisher quarterback since Walsh threw for 397 in a loss to Cortland in October 2019. 

Fisher Forming a Dynamic Rushing Attack

  • Running backs Peyton Nolan and Camden Chance combined for 214 yards rushing and three touchdowns against Keystone. 

  • A senior, Nolan rushed for 143 yards and a score in his season debut. It was his fifth career game with 100 rushing yards or more. 

  • A 2023 first-team All-Empire 8 pick, Nolan finished second in the league in rushing yards (1,011) and first in average yards per game (111.2) last season. He found the end zone 11 times, including three times in a 38-21 win over Hartwick. 

  • Chance, a junior transfer who played basketball at Oswego State, had 71 yards and scored twice against Keystone. His first collegiate touchdown came on a 41-yard run in the third quarter. 

  • The Cardinals rushed for 250 yards as a team in the game. Since the beginning of of last season, they have amassed 200 yards rushing or more in five games. 

Vanderbrink Standing Out On Defense

  • Sophomore defensive back/linebacker Timothy Vanderbrink has become a key part of Fisher's defense after playing in four games last year as a freshman. 

  • Vanderbrink leads the Cardinals with 18 tackles and has one stop for a loss of yards. He's tied for the team lead with two passes defended.

  • Against Keystone, Vanderbrink returned his first collegiate interception 43 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, tying the game at 13. Kyle Farewell's extra point put the Cardinals in front 14-13. 

Series History: Fisher vs. Wilkes 

  • Last season's meeting in Pittsford marked the first game between the programs. The Cardinals beat the Colonels 29-20 at Growney Stadium. 

  • Nolan rushed for 70 yards and scored a touchdown on 15 attempts. Quarterback Aaron Chase completed 14 of 24 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. 

Looking Ahead

  • The Cardinals face SUNY Brockport in the 19th annual Courage Bowl next Saturday, Oct. 5, at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium. 

  • Brockport has won the last six games in the series. 

  • Fisher last beat Brockport in September 2016.
