PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team finished the regular season undefeated in their conference, beating Utica in both ends of a doubleheader, 2-1 and 5-1.
The wins send the Cardinals into the Empire 8 Softball Championship, which they will host, with a perfect 14-0 conference record. They finished the regular season at 30-4 overall, going undefeated since falling 9-5 to Ithaca in game two of a doubleheader on March 28.
GAME 1- Fisher 2, Utica 1
Down to their last out, the Cardinals won in walkoff fashion as junior
Mari Spitz singled through the Utica infield for a two-run hit to right to end the game. The bases-load knock ended what had been a pitchers duel through most of the game between junior
Ainsley Evanetski and Utica's Jordyn Conte.
Utica outhit Fisher, 7-5, and scored in the third inning on an RBI groundout. Evanetski and the Cardinals defense held the Pioneers to just that run, however, as the Brighton graduate struck out six in the seven-inning complete game. Utica removed Conte to begin the seventh, and the new pitcher loaded the bases before Conte was put back in, setting the stage for Spitz' heroics.
Madi Rose,
Taylor Shackleton, Amalia DiMartino, and
Cassidy Evanetski all had hits in the victory.
GAME 2- Fisher 5, Utica 1
Utica again took an early lead in the third inning, but the Cardinals answered back with five unanswered runs to end the regular season with a win.
Freshman
Emily McManus led the way, going 2-for-2 with two walks, driving in two runs while scoring a run. Junior
Cassidy Evanetski had two hits as well, doubling and scoring a run. Shackleton and senior
Kelly Cournoyer recorded an RBI each.
Three-time reigning Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week
Cassidy Ormond was in the circle for Fisher and scattered six hits and an earned run in a complete game of work, striking out six. She ends the regular season 15-2.
