MEDOFRD, MA – The St. John Fisher University softball team traveled to Tufts University on Thursday to compete in the 2024 NCAA DIII Softball Regionals. The Cardinals took on University of Rochester in the first game of the weekend and fell by a final score of 6-2.
Fisher did get the bats working in the opening two innings, with
Madi Rose and
Taylor Shackleton getting base hits in the opening frame and
Cassidy Evanetski and
Kelly Cournoyer getting singles in the second. Unfortunately, the team was unable to push in a run. In the third inning, the Yellowjackets were able to go ahead 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, Fisher began to fight back.
Emily McManus and
Mari Spitz both singled and forced a pitching change.
Amalia DeMartino worked a walk to load the bases and Cournoyer was hit by a pitch to drive in the first run.
Katie Mannis pinch in and grounded into a fielder's choice but it was enough to make the score 4-2. The Yellowjackets added to more of their own in the bottom of the frame and the Cardinals fell 6-2.
Ainsley Evanetski made the start and pitched 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking one and striking out four.
Molly Kuhn tossed the remaining 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk. McManus, Spitz and C. Evanetski all recorded multi-hit games.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, May 17 as they take on Western New England University in an Elimination game. First-pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
