PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team bounced back from a loss to Utica University earlier in the day to defeat Alfred University in an elimination game, 8-7. The slugfest against the Saxons was capped off by a walk-off single by
Emily McManus to push the Cardinals to the Empire 8 Championship Finals.
Game One: Fisher 3 – Utica 7
Fisher fell behind 4-0 in the first inning against the Pioneers and it was a deficit they were unable to overcome. In the fourth inning,
Amalia DeMartino and
Kelly Cournoyer both had RBI singles to cut the deficit to 4-2 and then in the sixth McManus homered to make the score 4-3. Utica answered in the bottom of the sixth with three runs of their own and it proved enough to knock off the Cardinals.
DeMartino finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk and RBI.
Ainsley Evanetski and
Cassidy Ormond split work in the game with both going 3.0 innings each. Combined they allowed seven runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Game Two: Fisher 8 – Alfred 7
The team once again faced an early deficit, going behind 3-0 in the top of the first to the Saxons. However,
Mari Spitz quickly evened the score at 3-3 with a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame. The Saxons added two more in the top of the third, but in the bottom of the inning, a Cournoyer grand slam pushed the Cardinals ahead 7-5. Alfred pushed in two more runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 7-7 and the matchup remained scoreless for the following 5.0 innings. In the bottom of the ninth,
Maddie Donlin worked a walk and was moved over to scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt by
Taylor Shackleton. McManus came to the plate and brought Donlin home on a walk-off single to left-field.
Spitz was incredible at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Shackleton and McManus both recorded 2-for-4 days. Evanetski took over the first inning for Ormond and proceeded to piths 9.0 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out six.
The Cardinals will have a rematch against no. 3 seed Utica University on Saturday, May 10 with the first game starting at 11 a.m.
