PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team battled Hartwick College in the Empire 8 Championship Semi-Final at home. The Cardinals took an early lead and shutout the Hawks for three of the four quarters and now set their sights at another conference championship.
Fisher quickly jumped in front with
Mary Fiorentino and
Farrah Zalla scoring goals in the opening two minutes of action.
Hanna Kumpf and
Sydney Carpenter added two more goals to capitalize on Hartwick penalties. The Hawks scored their two goals in the first quarter, but another score for Carpenter and Fiorentino put the team ahead 6-2 after one. In the second,
Kaley Griffin put her name in the books with back-to-back scores, while Kumpf added her second and
Chelsea Lopata chipped in her first to make the score 10-2 in favor of the Cardinals heading into halftime.
In the third, Fiorentino and Kumpf both scored two goals and
Ellie Leisen recorded her first, making the lead 13 heading into the final frame. Carpenter scored her third and fourth goals of the game, while Lopata added her second and Griffin completed her hat-trick.
Fiorentino led the way in points with six thanks to four goals and two assists. Kumpf was second in points with five, on four goals and one assist. Carpenter,
Cara Landry and Girffin all finished the game with four points.
Maggie Cross earned the win, playing the first three quarters and making seven saves to secure the win.
Up next for the Cardinals is the Empire 8 Conference Championship Final hosted by Fisher at Growney Stadium. The contest will take place on Saturday, May 4 with a time to be announced at a later date.
