PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team were at home on Tuesday to take on SUNY Geneseo. The Cardinals came back late to take a lead but it was the Knights that finished on top, handing the Cardinals a 12-11 loss.
Fisher fell behind 2-0 in the opening few minutes of the game, but
Cara Landry and
Emma Biel got the team on the board and tied the game at 2-2.
Sydney Carpenter scored a goal with five minutes to play, but after one period of play the Knights led 4-3. After falling behind 5-3,
Kaley Griffin and
Hanna Kumpf scored to draw even once again with Geneseo at 5-5. However, Fisher still trailed at halftime 7-5.
In the third quarter, Kumpf and
Farrah Zalla each scored to keep the Cardinals in the game going into the fourth quarter. In the opening two minutes of the final frame, Carpenter and
Chelsea Lopata tied the game at 9-9. After Geneseo took a one goal lead, Kumpf and Carpenter went back-to-back to give Fisher their first lead of the day. The Knights drew even at 11-11 and then with five seconds left the scored the game winner to give the Cardinals a 12-11 loss.
Carpenter and Kumpf led the way in points with five each. The two had three goals and two assists a piece.
Maddie Lowney was impressive on the defensive end, totaling five ground balls, five caused turnovers and eight draw controls.
Up next for Fisher is another home game on Saturday, April 13 against Utica University. The matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m.
