Women’s lacrosse storms back, beats Cortland 13-6

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Initially down 4-1 after the first quarter, the St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team stormed back to outscore SUNY Cortland 12-2 over the final three quarters to win their home opener on Wednesday, 13-6.

Cortland opened scoring early with two goals by Amy Hoeffner before the Cardinals got on the board thanks to a score by freshman Emily DeVoe with 5:15 left in the quarter- her first collegiate goal. However, Cortland responded with two more goals before the end of the first.

The Cardinals struck back with force in the second quarter, as junior Hanna Kumpf and junior Sydney Carpenter scored to narrow the Cortland lead to 4-3. Although the Red Dragons moved to 5-3 on a Nicole Iapoce goal, the Cardinals then scored seven unanswered, tying it at five on a Carpenter score with just over two minutes left in the half and then moving ahead 6-5 when Carpenter scored again with under a minute left in the half.

Fisher held Cortland scoreless until early in the fourth quarter, when Rachel Janis scored to make it 10-6, but the Cardinals scored the last three goals of the game to put it away.

Carpenter and sophomore Kaley Griffin both finished the game with four goals, while junior Mary Fiorentino notched four assists. Kumpf had three goals. Senior Cara Landry also found the back of the net.

On defense, sophomore Maddie Lowney led the way with eight draw controls, while also pulling up two ground balls. Carpenter led the team with three ground balls and also caused two turnovers.

After allowing four goals in the first, freshman goalie Kaylee Gadol allowed only two more the rest of the game, making seven saves for her first win at Growney Stadium.

The Cardinals return to play on Saturday, March 23, when they travel to Ithaca.
