ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team began their season on Friday with a road matchup against the University of Rochester. The two teams traded scores all game, but it was the Yellowjackets that grabbed the lead and handed the Cardinals their first loss of the year, 10-9.
 
Fisher faced an early deficit, but Sydney Carpenter tallied her first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1 on an assist by Mary Fiorentino. Rochester scored again, but this time it was Emma Biel that answered for the Cardinals to tie the game at 2-2 going into the second quarter. As the next frame began, the Yellowjackets once again took the lead and a minute later, Farrah Zalla recorded her first goal of the season to make it even. As the quarter progressed, UofR claimed a 5-3 lead with seven minutes to play. Kaley Griffin scored on a free position shot cutting the deficit to one and with 2:27 to go and then Fiorentino converted on a free position shot to make the game 5-5 at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, the Cardinals were unable to match the opposition, allowing three unanswered goals until Cara Landry took advantage of a man-up opportunity. Ellie Leisen cut the deficit to just one as the fourth quarter began, but this time it was the Yellowjackets that answered scores with goals of their own. Despite a goal with 2:41 to go that brought the team to within one, the Cardinals were unable to secure the comeback and fell, 10-9.
 
The next game for Fisher will be during spring break in Florida. The team will take on Christopher Newport at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex in Clearwater, Florida. The game is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
