Cardinals Fall To Golden Knights In Walk-Off Fashion

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University baseball team played their season opener on Wednesday, taking on Clarkson University at Finger Lakes Community College due to weather. The game was closely contested and entertaining, but it was the Golden Knights that came out on top, 8-7 after a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth.

Fisher fell behind 3-0 in the opening inning, but settled in after that. They began to chip away at the deficit in the 3rd inning, with Nick Lemire driving in James Murphy with a single through the left side. In the 5th, the Cardinals evened the score. Ethan Perry doubled down the right field line to score Murphy against to make the score 3-2, Brendan Bucello followed with a ground out that was enough to bring in Dominic Guccia and tie the game at 3-3.

An inning later, Brian Norsen singled up the middle to give the team their first lead of the day and Lemire added to that advantage with a two RBI single that scored Norsen and Jake Crantz. Lemire later scored on a sacrifice fly by Guccia. After six innings, Fisher led 7-3. The Golden Knights chipped away at the deficit in the seventh inning, making the score 7-5 with two frame to play. In the ninth, Clarkson loaded the bases and a double cleared them and handed the Cardinals a 8-7 loss.

Norsen finished the day 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two runs scored. Lemire was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Guccia and Perry also recorded multi-hit games with two each. After the first inning the Cardinals tossed 5.0 innings of no-hit ball. Tanner Frank and Anthony Lang each went 2.0 frames, and Lang tallied three strikeouts. Russell Dunlap recorded a 1-2-3 8th inning, but despite collecting two outs in the ninth was unable to close it out and earned the loss.

Up next for Fisher is a trip to New Jersey, where they will play a three game series starting on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m.
