PITTSFORD, N.Y – The St. John Fisher University men's basketball team played host to Nazareth University on Saturday for their final game of the regular season. The Cardinals were able to hold off a late push by the Golden Flyers to get the win, 77-76. The Cardinals finish the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and finish Empire 8 play with a record of 13-3.
The Cardinals and the Golden Flyers were neck and neck with each other in the first half. With 4:48 left to go in the first the game was locked at 30-30. The final 4:22 of the half saw the Cardinals go on a 10-2 run, putting them in the led at the break 40-32. At the halfway point, it was
Brad Fowler with 12 points and
Daniel Cook with 8 points leading the way for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals picked up right where they left off, taking an 11-point lead at the 16:55 mark of the second half and the largest lead of the game after a Fowler layup. The Golden Flyers however did not go away, the Cardinals advantage was cut to just 3 with 9:09 remaining in the final half. The final 9 minutes was highly contested and saw the Cardinals trail 72-71 with 1:40 left after a Nazareth 3 pointer.
Jack Foley got the lead right back for Fisher after his 3 pointer was good with 1:22 remaining. The Cardinals were able to get defensive stops and hit clutch free throws down the stretch by Fowler and Foley to put away the game.
The Cardinals were led by Cook with 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Fowler also had an impressive 18 points and eight rebounds.
The Cardinals next game will be the first round of the Empire 8 postseason tournament. They will host Houghton University on Tuesday, Feb. 20 with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
