CORTLAND, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team shot a season-high 53.8% from the field on Tuesday night but fell 88-81 to SUNY Cortland at Corey Gym to conclude non-conference play.
The Cardinals, who'd won three straight games entering the contest, fell to 5-4 overall. Cortland (3-1) won its third consecutive game.
Senior guard Katie Moravec led the Cardinals with 19 points while shooting 6 of 11 overall (1 of 2 from three) and 6 of 8 from the foul line. She also had a team-high three steals to go with two assists and two rebounds.
Junior guards Presleigh Brunner (17 points) and Hannah Ferguson (14 points) and senior guard Sidney Tomasso (16 points) also scored in double figures. Ferguson set career highs in points, shots made (6) and rebounds (9).
The Cardinals shot 28 of 52 overall (53.8%) and 8 of 19 from 3-point range (42.1%).
After the Cardinals jumped out to a 19-8 lead, the Red Dragons responded with a 14-3 run to tie the game (22-22) at the end of the first quarter. They used a 12-4 push at the end of the second to take a 45-36 lead into halftime.
Cortland pulled away from the Cardinals in the third quarter, pushing its lead to as many as 21 points. The Red Dragons shot nearly 60% from the field (17-29) and 45.5% from 3-point range (5-11) in the second half.
Cortland's Kayla Campbell scored a game-high 25 points while shooting 9 of 14 from the field, 1 of 3 from three and 6 of 7 from the foul line. Kaeil McNally scored 15 points and knocked down all three of her 3-point attempts.
Joleen Lusk and Brooke Tillotson each scored 13 points for the Red Dragons.
