PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The No. 1-seeded Geneseo Knights scored once in the second period and another time in the fourth en route to a shutout victory over the No. 5-seeded St. John Fisher field hockey team in the Empire 8 semifinals on Wednesday evening at College Stadium.
The Cardinals went 9-11 overall and 6-3 in Empire 8 regular-season play this season. Geneseo, 17-2 overall and ranked No. 18 nationally, will host No. 3-seeded Hartwick in the conference championship game on Sunday. The Knights are 11-0 in Empire 8 games this season.
Hailey Roethel opened the scoring at the 18:11 mark on an assist from Shannon Cunningham and Sam Lewis. Cunningham assisted Lewis on the game-sealing goal late in the fourth quarter.
The Knights put constant pressure on the Cardinals' defense, taking 29 shots and putting 16 of them on goal. The Cardinals finished the contest with two shots (both on goal).
St. John Fisher senior goalkeeper Senja Matson, named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, made 14 saves, one shy of her career high.
