ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University football team's fourth-quarter comeback fell just short on Saturday afternoon in a 34-31 loss to the Alfred University Saxons at Yunevich Stadium.
The Cardinals lost their second straight game and fell to 3-5 overall (2-3 Empire 8). Alfred improved to 5-3 (3-2 Empire 8) and won its second straight game.
St. John Fisher, which trailed 31-17 for most of the fourth quarter, rallied to tie the game late and appeared in position to force overtime.
Fifth-year senior defensive back DeAndre Green cut the Cardinals' deficit to seven with a 42-yard pick-six – Fisher's third defensive touchdown of the season – with just more than six minutes to play. After the Cardinals' defense forced Alfred to punt on the subsequent drive, senior running back Peyton Nolan capped a 10-play, 68-yard possession that took 2:56 with a 1-yard touchdown. Senior kicker Kyle Farewell tied the game at 31 with the extra point.
Alfred's Dion Anderson returned Farewell's ensuing kickoff 47 yards to the St. John Fisher 45-yard line. Quarterback Chris Kelly completed passes for 17 and seven yards to set the Saxons up for a go-ahead field goal in the final minute.
Dominic Bronco's 38-yard kick soared through the uprights with 43 seconds remaining to put the Saxons ahead 34-31. Farewell missed a game-tying field goal attempt wide left from 52 yards as time expired. He made a 24-yard kick earlier in the game.
Cardinals sophomore quarterback Ryan Whitney completed 18 of 30 attempts for 228 yards and threw touchdown passes to tight end Carter Vedrani and wide receiver Evan DeLutis. He also rushed 14 times for a career-high 108 yards.
Sophomore wide receiver Jackson Cusack set career highs in pass receptions (7) and receiving yards (96). Whitney completed passes to nine different players.
Senior defensive linemen Jeremy Woodcock and Jabari Oxley recorded their first sacks of the season. Zach Dreisbach, a senior defensive end, recorded his team-leading third sack.
Green's interception was his second of the season and the fourth of his career. He also broke up a season-high three passes.
