Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight Game With 2-0 Victory Over Alfred

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team blanked the Alfred University Saxons 2-0 on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium for its third consecutive victory.

The Cardinals (6-3-1, 4-1 Empire 8) kept pace with Brockport (8-0-1, 4-0 E8) atop the league standings, while the Saxons dropped to 5-2-2 (1-2-1 E8).

After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals found the back of the net twice and continued to lock down the Saxons in the second. Alfred registered just one shot in the contest and did not log one attempt in the second half.

The Cardinals scored their first goal in the opening minutes of the second half, as Kate Rachwal found the back of the net on an assist from fellow senior midfielder Emma Spelman. It was Rachwal's third goal and Spelman's fifth assist of the season.

Spelman, tied for the team lead with 15 total points, has five points in the Cardinals' last two games. She scored twice in a 7-1 win over SUNY Poly over the weekend.

Fisher put the game away later in the half when junior forward Madelyn Wania connected with senior forward Riley Grimm, who's scored twice in the Cardinals' last three games. She has four goals on the season.

Wania has recorded at least one point in six of Fisher's 10 games this season, including the last three contests. The transfer from the College of St. Rose has 15 points overall.

Junior goalkeeper Avery Byrnes made one save in her first shutout of the season. She has 11 career clean sheets.
