ALFRED, N.Y. – Goalkeeper Christian Burkhart recorded his fifth shutout of the season on Wednesday night in the St. John Fisher University men's soccer team's 1-0 victory over Alfred University at Yunevich Stadium.
The Cardinals, who had two draws and two losers in their last four games entering Wednesday, won for the first time since Sept. 14 and improved to 3-3-4 overall (2-0-2 Empire 8). Alfred dropped to 4-6-1 (2-2-1 E8).
Fisher scored late in the second half and preserved the lead the rest of the way. It got on the board at the 74:16 mark when senior midfielder Troy Jezioro, who had the ball on the right sideline, connected with sophomore Jack Tamburino on a spectacular pass in front of the net. Tamburino found the back of the net with his left foot while sliding for his second collegiate goal (both scored this season).
Jezioro recorded his first point of the season – and his career – with the assist.
The Cardinals finished the contest with 12 shots, while the Saxons had 14. They had seven shots on goal to Alfred's four.
Burkhart finished with four saves and notched his Empire 8-leading fifth shutout. Only one other Empire 8 keeper – Brockport's Andrew Taylor (4) – has more than three shutouts this season.
The Cardinals moved into third place in the Empire 8 standings.
