PITTSFORD, N.Y.- The St. John Fisher University men's soccer team won its third consecutive game on Wednesday night, beating Houghton University 3-1 at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals improved to 6-4-4 overall and 5-1-2 in Empire 8 play, while Houghton fell to 3-9-1 overall (1-5-1 Empire 8).
With 13 total shots, St. John Fisher had plenty of high-percentage scoring chances throughout contest. Cardinals sophomore forward
Jack Tamburino opened the scoring, netting his team-leading fifth goal of the season on an assist from fifth-year midfielder
Joey Avallone at the 8:03 mark in the first half. Tamburino has scored a goal in four of Fisher's last five games; Avallone has three assists in Fisher's last three games.
The teams went into halftime tied after Houghton evened the score later in the first half on a goal from Samuel O'Brien.
The Cardinals reclaimed the lead early in the second half when senior forward
Riley Rease scored his second goal of the season on an assist from senior midfielder
Adam Grover. The Cardinals sustained heavy offensive pressure, taking seven more shots in the half before extending their lead with another goal. Avallone put the game out of reach, making the score 3-1 after knocking home a loose ball in the box at the 86:57 mark.
