UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's tennis team fell 5-2 to Russell Sage in the opening round of the Empire 8 Women's Tennis Championship at Utica University on Tuesday evening.
The No. 4-seeded Gators (8-5) won two of three doubles matches and three of four singles matches against the No. 5-seeded Cardinals (4-7).
Sophomore Lily Miller had Fisher's lone singles win, beating Emma Nuzzi 6-2 and 6-0 in the No. 3 match. In doubles action, Miller and Grace Fisher won their match 8-3 against Jessica Korbieh and Emma Vander Baan.
With the win, Russell Sage advanced to the Empire 8 semifinal round. The Gators face No. 1-seeded Hartwick at noon on Friday, Oct. 18.
