PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's volleyball team head to William Smith College over the weekend to compete in the Heron Invitational. They will take on Stevens University on Friday, Sept. 22 before taking on SUNY Cortland and William Smith on Saturday, Sept. 23.
A Winning Week
The Cardinals are coming off a week where they went 3-1 in four competitions, defeating SUNY Brockport, RIT and Oswego State.
Kristen McIntosh helped lead the team to a 3-2 win over the Golden Eagles by recording 16 kills on a .414 percentage. McIntosh and
Delayne Young then combined for 17 kills to sweep RIT later in the week. Young continued the success against the Lakers, recording 12 kills.
Scouting the Ducks
Stevens have a 5-2 overall record, and have won their previous two games. Against the Cardinals, the Ducks have not lost to the Cardinals, holding a perfect 13-0 mark. In their previous matchup, Sept. 3 2022, the match went five sets as the two teams traded wins until Stevens took the fifth frame, 15-13. Stevens is led by junior, Cleo Shannon, how has a total of 83.5 points on the season thanks to 75 kills and 17.0 blocks. The ducks have two setters with at least 100 assists in Molly Harris (124) and Gabbi Roberts (100).
A Battle Against Dragons
SUNY Cortland began their season with five straight wins, and currently hold a 7-2 overall mark. Recently, they are coming off a weekend of defeating Scranton and Haverford. The Red Dragons are led offensively by Anna Pilkey and Allie Sturgess. Pilkey has a total of 115.5 points on 100 kills, while Sturgess tallied 110.0 points on 93 kills. Meadow Wittman has been the assist leader with 161 assists in 34 sets. The Cardinals swept Cortland in last years matchup to snap an 0-10 record in this matchups history.
First Meeting Against Herons
This will be the first time the Cardinals will battle against William Smith. The Herons are 6-3 this season, including a perfect 4-0 at home. Outside hitter, Malya Sayre, is ranked no. 16 in all of NCAA DIII in kills per set with 4.15. Her 141 kills leads the team, along with her 174.5 points. Elaina Wamhoff leads the passing with 291 assists.
Player to Watch
Ana Gutman has enjoyed a strong first year of collegiate volleyball and was named Empire 8 Women's Volleyball rookie of the week. She is third on the team in total points with an even 100 and in kills with 71. Is leads the team with a strong hitting percentage of .342 and in blocks with 33.0. She will look to build on her year against tough opposition.
